My name is Juneisy, although I sometimes go by June, and the history of food, cooking and eating, ingredients and cookbooks/recipes is my passion. I’m not sure where or when I acquired the love for this type of history but it has been part of my entire adult life. I always thought that doing food history was nothing but a pipe dream, then I watched Good Eats and its nutritional anthropologist. If she can do it, so can I!
I am currently undertaking graduate studies as PhD student in Early American History, with a particular interest in, you guessed it, food.
While on this blog I concentrate on recipes and cooking methods, my academic interest has more to do with food in its social, political, and cultural context. People rarely think of food as anything more than nutrition, but as Sidney Mintz said in Tasting Food, Tasting Freedom, food has “meanings that transcend [its] nutritive role.” Once I figured that out, I never looked at food the same way again.
